551N/AAccessX is an extension to the X Window System for making keyboard and mouse
551N/Aactions more accessible to users with disabilities.
551N/AThe AccessX utility was co-developed by Digital Equipment Corporation,
551N/ASun Microsystems Laboratories, Inc., and by The Trace Research Center
551N/Aat the University of Wisconsin-Madison (funding provided by the
551N/ANational Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, US
551N/ADept. of Education, Grants H133E80021 & H133E30012). Additional
551N/Asupport was received from the X Consortium and IBM. The X11R6
551N/Aversion of AccessX was incorporated into the XKB keyboard extension by
551N/AAccessX has the following windows: the main window, the Settings window,
551N/AHelp windows, and two Status windows. Information concerning features on
551N/Athe Status and Settings windows appears in the Help windows on individual
551N/AThe main window has the following features:
551N/Ao Three pulldown menus, one for controlling the program and accessing
551N/A Files, one for bringing up Status windows, and one for
551N/A getting Help windows. Press F10 and either 'f', 's', or 'h' to
551N/A open these menus. Use arrow keys and Return to choose an item.
551N/Ao A checkbox for turning AccessX on and off ('Enable AccessX').
551N/A Note that exiting the accessx utility does not disable it.
551N/A If you want to disable the utility, you must uncheck the 'Enable
551N/Ao A checkbox for specifying that you get a beep when a feature is turned
551N/Ao Checkboxes for turning individual features on and off.
551N/Ao A checkbox and slider for setting a timeout. Set the timeout if you
551N/A want to have AccessX disable itself after an interval with no
551N/A keyboard or mouse activity. This is useful if the system is shared
551N/A with people without disabilities.
551N/Ao A button for bringing up the Settings window.
551N/AThe Settings window has checkboxes and sliders for affecting the behavior
551N/Aof various AccessX features. These are discussed in the Help for each
551N/Afeature. Additionally, the Settings window has the following four buttons:
551N/Ao The Apply button saves your changes and leaves the window up.
551N/Ao The Cancel button cancels all changes and dismisses the window.
551N/Ao The Okay button saves your changes and dismisses the window.
551N/Ao The Reset button resets the settings to their last saved values.

551N/AIntended Users: People who can press only one key at a time
551N/A (
e.g., those who type with one finger or with a
551N/AWhat StickyKeys Does: With StickyKeys on, you can keep a modifier key
551N/A (Control, Alt, Shift, or Meta) active while you
551N/A press one or more other keys. This allows you
551N/A to type, for example, Control-D as two separate
551N/AHow It Works: With StickyKeys on, pressing a modifier key once
551N/A will make that key active until another key is
551N/A pressed. For example, if you press Shift, 'h',
551N/A Pressing a modifier twice makes it active until
551N/A you press that same modifier again. For
551N/A example, if you press Shift, Shift, 'h', and
551N/A 'i', you get 'HI'. Press Shift again to
551N/ATurning It
On/Off: Sticky Keys may be turned on and off in the
551N/A o Check the StickyKeys checkbox in
551N/A *The following are valid only if you've started
551N/A the X server with the -accessx option.*
551N/A o Press Shift five times in
551N/A o Press a modifier and any other key
551N/ANote: You can also deactivate StickyKeys by pressing
551N/A two modifiers at once, if you've checked the
551N/A appropriate checkbox in the Settings window.
551N/A You can have your machine beep when a modifier
551N/A key is activated or deactivated. Check the
551N/A appropriate box in the Settings window.
551N/A There is a Status window for displaying which
551N/A modifier keys, if any, are active.
551N/A---- Mouse Keys Help -----------------------------
551N/AIntended Users: People who need a keyboard based alternative to
551N/AWhat MouseKeys Does: Lets you use the numeric keypad to emulate mouse
551N/A activities (moving the pointer on the screen and
551N/A clicking mouse buttons).
551N/AHow It Works: The keys on the numeric pad emulate the mouse as
551N/A o The 1 - 4 and 6 - 9 keys move the
551N/A pointer around the screen.
551N/A o 5 is a mouse click; 0 is a mouse
551N/A button press (and hold); + (plus)
551N/A is a double-click; Del is a mouse
551N/A o / (slash) activates the SELECT
551N/A mouse button; * (multiply)
551N/A activates ADJUST; - (minus)
551N/A o Enter toggles between the x10 and
551N/A The user may have to hold down the 'Alt Graph' key
551N/A while pressing the keypad keys.
551N/AAdjusting It: The Settings window allows you to adjust:
551N/A o The maximum speed of the pointer.
551N/A o The time it takes the pointer to reach
551N/A o The motion delay time before the pointer
551N/A starts moving. Note: If the 'Motion delay'
551N/A scale is greyed out it is because the X
551N/A server only supports the old AccessX
551N/A extension which does not provide support for
551N/A the 'Motion delay' feature.
551N/ATurning It
On/Off: You can turn MouseKeys on and off in the
551N/A o Check the MouseKeys checkbox on
551N/A o Press Alt-Shift-NumLock. (Valid
551N/A only if you have started
551N/A the X server with the -accessx
551N/ANote: You can bring up a MouseKeys Status window from
551N/A the Main window to display which mouse buttons,
551N/A---- Toggle Keys Help -----------------------------
551N/AIntended Users: People with limited or no vision, who are unable
551N/A to use the LED lights on a keyboard to tell if
551N/A the Num Lock, Caps Lock, and Scroll Lock keys
551N/AWhat ToggleKeys Does: Beeps when one of these keys is activated or
551N/ATurning It
On/Off: Check the ToggleKeys checkbox in the main
551N/A---- Repeat Keys Help -----------------------------
551N/AIntended Users: People who have difficulty removing their finger
551N/A (or mouth stick) from a key quickly enough to
551N/A prevent it from repeating.
551N/AWhat RepeatKeys Does: With RepeatKeys on, a key must be held down for
551N/A a certain length of time before it will start to
551N/AAdjusting It: You can adjust the behavior of RepeatKeys in two
551N/A ways, using the Settings window:
551N/A o You can set how long a key must be
551N/A held down initially before it
551N/A o You can set how long a key must be
551N/A how many times a key will repeat
551N/ATurning It
On/Off: You can turn RepeatKeys on and off in the
551N/A o Check the RepeatKeys checkbox in
551N/A o Hold down the Shift key for 8
551N/A seconds. (Valid only if you have
551N/A started the X server with the
551N/ANote: Holding the Shift key down for 8 seconds also
551N/A---- Slow Keys Help -----------------------------
551N/AIntended Users: People who have trouble typing one key without
551N/A accidentally typing others. (For example,
551N/A someone who hits the 'r' key while typing 't'.)
551N/AWhat SlowKeys Does: With SlowKeys on, only keys that are pressed for
551N/A a minimum period of time will be accepted as
551N/AAdjusting It: You can set (in the Settings window) the
551N/A notification style for SlowKeys. You can have
551N/A your machine beep when a) a key is initially
551N/A pressed, b) the key-press is accepted, c) both,
551N/A You set the amount of time you want to pass
551N/A before keyboard input is accepted. For example,
551N/A if you set this to one second, then only a key
551N/A that is held down for one second or more will be
551N/A Set this value in the Settings window.
551N/ATurning It
On/Off: There are two ways to turn SlowKeys on and off:
551N/A o Check the SlowKeys checkbox in the
551N/A o Hold the Shift key down for 8
551N/A seconds. (Valid only if you've

551N/AIntended Users: People whose fingers `bounce` while attempting
551N/AWhat BounceKeys Does: With BounceKeys on, the system ignores rapid,
551N/A repeated pressings of a single key.
551N/AHow It Works: You set the amount of time that must pass before
551N/A a second pressing of a key is accepted as input.
551N/A Any accidental `bouncing` on the key is ignored
551N/A Set this interval in the Settings window.
551N/ATurning It
On/Off: Check the BounceKeys checkbox in the main window.
