0N/A
Summary

0N/A
0N/A
This module requires the service of
mod_proxy
. It provides the features used for
0N/A proxying HTTP and HTTPS requests.
mod_proxy_http

0N/A supports HTTP/0.9, HTTP/1.0 and HTTP/1.1. It does not
0N/A provide any caching abilities. If you want to set up a caching
0N/A proxy, you might want to use the additional service of the
0N/A
mod_cache
module.

0N/A
0N/A
Thus, in order to get the ability of handling HTTP proxy requests,
0N/A
mod_proxy
and
mod_proxy_http

0N/A have to be present in the server.

0N/A
0N/A

Warning

0N/A
Do not enable proxying until you have secured your server. Open proxy
0N/A servers are dangerous both to your network and to the Internet at
0N/A large.

0N/A
Environment Variables

0N/A
In addition to the configuration directives that control the
0N/A behaviour of
mod_proxy
, there are a number of
0N/A <dfn>environment variables</dfn> that control the HTTP protocol
0N/A provider. Environment variables below that don't specify specific values
0N/A are enabled when set to any value.

0N/A

0N/A
proxy-sendextracrlf

0N/A
Causes proxy to send an extra CR-LF newline on the end of a
0N/A request. This is a workaround for a bug in some browsers.

0N/A
force-proxy-request-1.0

0N/A
Forces the proxy to send requests to the backend as HTTP/1.0
0N/A and disables HTTP/1.1 features.

0N/A
proxy-nokeepalive

0N/A
Forces the proxy to close the backend connection after
0N/A each request.

0N/A
proxy-chain-auth

0N/A
If the proxy requires authentication, it will read and
0N/A consume the proxy authentication credentials sent by the client.
0N/A With <var>proxy-chain-auth</var> it will also forward
0N/A the credentials to the next proxy in the chain. This may
0N/A be necessary if you have a chain of proxies that share
0N/A authentication information. Security Warning:
0N/A Do not set this unless you know you need it, as it forwards
0N/A sensitive information!

0N/A
proxy-sendcl

0N/A
HTTP/1.0 required all HTTP requests that include a body
0N/A (e.g. POST requests) to include a <var>Content-Length</var>
0N/A header. This environment variable forces the Apache proxy to
0N/A send this header to the backend server, regardless of what the
0N/A Client sent to the proxy. It ensures compatibility when
0N/A proxying for an HTTP/1.0 or unknown backend. However, it
0N/A may require the entire request to be buffered by the proxy,
0N/A so it becomes very inefficient for large requests.

0N/A
proxy-sendchunks or proxy-sendchunked

0N/A
This is the opposite of <var>proxy-sendcl</var>. It allows
0N/A request bodies to be sent to the backend using chunked transfer
0N/A encoding. This allows the request to be efficiently streamed,
0N/A but requires that the backend server supports HTTP/1.1.

0N/A
proxy-interim-response

0N/A
This variable takes values
RFC
(the default) or
0N/A
Suppress
. Earlier httpd versions would suppress
0N/A HTTP interim (1xx) responses sent from the backend. This is
0N/A technically a violation of the HTTP protocol. In practice,
0N/A if a backend sends an interim response, it may itself be
0N/A extending the protocol in a manner we know nothing about,
0N/A or just broken. So this is now configurable: set
0N/A
proxy-interim-response RFC
to be fully protocol
0N/A compliant, or
proxy-interim-response Suppress

0N/A to suppress interim responses.

0N/A
proxy-initial-not-pooled

0N/A
If this variable is set, no pooled connection will be reused
0N/A if the client request is the initial request on the frontend connection. This avoids
0N/A the "proxy: error reading status line from remote server" error message
0N/A caused by the race condition that the backend server closed the
0N/A pooled connection after the connection check by the proxy and
0N/A before data sent by the proxy reached the backend. It has to be
0N/A kept in mind that setting this variable downgrades performance,
0N/A especially with HTTP/1.0 clients.
0N/A
