a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsyncFINAL RELEASE SHOWSTOPPERS:
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync * If any request gets to the core handler, without a flag that this
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync r->filename was tested by dir/file_walk, we need to 500 at the very
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync end of the ap_process_request_internal() processing. This provides
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync authors of older modules better compatibility, while still improving
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync the security and robustness of 2.0.
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync Status: still need to decide where this goes, OtherBill comments...

a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync we need to look at halting this in the 'default handler' case,
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync and that implies pushing the 'handler election' into the request
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync internal processing phase from the run request phase.
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync Jim asks: would a stopgap be something bogus like adding another
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync flag to request_rec ala eos_sent and before we OK, if not set
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync force 500?
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync Jeff says: reviewing the original message and the one
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync follow-up (also from OtherBill) it looks like OtherBill had a
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync good handle on the problem, though I wonder why not just put a
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync simple check in default_handler to see if dir/file_walk has
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync been done (a footprint left by dir/file_walk doesn't have to
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync be in request_rec; a better place is core_request_config)
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync * We need to find out the right place to add the AddOutputFilterByType
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync directive. mod_mime? No. core with fixups? That's what it is now.
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync ap_pass_brigade() hook? As a filter that runs at HTTP_HEADER stage?
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync This needs to be resolved before the next public release.

a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync Status: Aaron has converted all but the perchild MPM to

a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync on the back burner, this is no longer a showstopper.
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync Aaron will patch perchild as soon as it becomes

a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync correctly since filters were added because it wasn't possible to
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync get the content that had already been written and the socket at
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync the same time. This mode lets us do that, so the MPM can be

a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync through in the query string, however. Roy says the
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync original reason for disallowing it, from five years ago,
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync was to protect CGI scripts that applied PATH_INFO to
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync a filesystem location and which might be tricked by
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync ..%2f..%2f(...). We *should* allow path-info of the

a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync the conclusion that it is not a problem in the worker MPM
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync (or at least, it is not isolated to a problem in worker).
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync I'll list some of the problems I'm seeing in case someone
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync else wants to pick up where I've left off:
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync - Delivery of just about any signal to one of the child
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync processes will send it into an infinite loop as well.
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync - Even though the parent is spinning out of control,
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync at first the child or children will appear to work
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync properly. At times it is possible to get it into a state,
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync however, where a request will hang until another concurrent
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync request "kicks" the first, at which point the second will
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync hang. My theory is that this has to do with the
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync pthread_cond_*() implementation in FreeBSD, but it's still
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync possible that it is in APR.
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync Justin adds: Oh, FreeBSD threads are implemented entirely with
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync select()/poll()/longjmp(). Welcome to the nightmare.
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync So, that means a ktrace output also has the thread
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync scheduling internals in it (since it is all the same to
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync the kernel). Which makes it hard to distinguish between
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync our select() calls and their select() calls.
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync *bangs head on wall repeatedly* But, some of the libc_r
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync files have a DBG_MSG #define. This is moderately helpful
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync when used with -DNO_DETACH. The kernel scheduler isn't
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync waking up the threads on a select(). Yum. And, I bet
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync those decrementing select calls have to do with the
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync scheduler. Time to brush up on our OS fundamentals.
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync * There is increasing demand from module writers for an API
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync that will allow them to control the server la apachectl.
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync Reasons include sole-function servers that need to die if
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync an external dependency (e.g., a database) fails, et cetera.
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync Perhaps something in the (ever more abused) scoreboard?
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync rbb: I don't believe the scoreboard is the correct mechanism
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync for this. We already have a pipe that goes between parent
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync and child for graceful shutdown events, along with an API that
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync can be used to send a message down that pipe. In threaded MPMs,
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync it is easy enough to make that one pipe be used for graceful
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync and graceless events, and it is also easy to open that pipe
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync to both parent and child for writing. Then we just need to
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync figure out how to do graceless on non-threaded MPMs.

a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync Madhu has submitted a patch for SSL caching - however, I
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync am -0 on that patch as I *think* we could implement the

a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync also thinks that the https filter logic may be sufficiently

a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync SMS is not being used anywhere else in the server,
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync several people expressed the opinion that we should
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync get rid of it entirely, meaning that the buckets
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync need their own memory management (free list) functions.
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync Cliff will implement that this weekend so we at least
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync have something to look at/compare with.

a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync * Win32: Migrate the MPM over to use APR thread/process calls. This
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync would eliminate some code in the Win32 branch that essentially
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync duplicates what is in APR.
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync * There are still a number of places in the code where we are
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync losing error status (i.e. throwing away the error returned by a

a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync * All DBMs suffer from confusion in support/dbmmanage (perl script) since
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync the dbmmanage employs the first-matched dbm format. This is not
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync necessarily the library that Apache was built with. Aught to
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync rewrite dbmmanage upon installation to bin/ with the proper library
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync for predictable mod_auth_dbm administration.
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync Questions; htdbm exists, time to kill dbmmanage, or does it remain
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync useful as a perl dbm management example? If we keep it,
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync do we address the issue above?
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync * Integrate mod_dav.
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync Some additional items remaining:

a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync - is it possible to remove the DAV: namespace stuff from util_xml?
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync * ap_core_translate() and its use by mod_mmap_static and mod_file_cache
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync are a bit wonky. The function should probably be exposed as a utility
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync function (such as ap_translate_url2fs() or ap_validate_fs_url() or
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync something). Another approach would be a new hook phase after
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync "translate" which would allow the module to munge what the
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync translation has decided to do.

a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync (at least) needs to be done:
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync - Document warning that OSR2 is required (for Crypt functions, in

a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync - Bring the Win9xConHook.dll from 1.3 into 2.0 (no sense till it
a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync actually works) and add in a splash of Win9x service code.

a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync * In order to use a DSO version of mod_ssl we have to link with

a734c64bff58bda2fa48c2795453e092167b0ff7vboxsync this is a hack. We should either revamp the APACHE_CHECK_SSL_TOOLKIT

Other bugs that need fixing:
* MaxRequestsPerChild measures connections, not requests.
Until someone has a better way, we'll probably just rename it
"MaxConnectionsPerChild".
* Regex containers don't work in an intutive way
Status: No one has come up with an efficient way to fix this
behavior. Dean has suggested getting rid of regex containers
completely.
OtherBill suggests: We at least seem to agree on eliminating
the <Container ~ foo> forms, and using only
<ContainerMatch foo> semantics.
* SIGSEGV on Linux (glibc 2.1.2) isn't caught properly by a
sigwaiting thread. We need to work around this, perhaps unless
there is hope soon for a fixed glibc.
* orig_ct in the byterange/multipart handling may not be
needed. Apache 1.3 just never stashed "multipart" into
r->content_type. We should probably follow suit since the
byterange stuff doesn't want the rest of the code to see the
multipart content-type; the other code should still think it is
dealing with the <orig_ct> stuff.
Status: Greg volunteers to investigate (esp. since he was most
likely the one to break it :-)
