7656b92221e26376547b0dc52b67e7a414ea9775Stephen Brooks The best solution to solving installation and
7656b92221e26376547b0dc52b67e7a414ea9775Stephen Brooks configuration issues is to take preventative measures by setting

e4f5a11d4a234623168c1558fcdf4341e11769e1James Kremer source of hints and information that can be used to figure out
e4f5a11d4a234623168c1558fcdf4341e11769e1James Kremer what went wrong and how to fix the problem.

e4f5a11d4a234623168c1558fcdf4341e11769e1James Kremer

e4f5a11d4a234623168c1558fcdf4341e11769e1James Kremer Zone serial numbers are just numbers — they aren't
e4f5a11d4a234623168c1558fcdf4341e11769e1James Kremer date related. A lot of people set them to a number that
e4f5a11d4a234623168c1558fcdf4341e11769e1James Kremer represents a date, usually of the form YYYYMMDDRR.
e4f5a11d4a234623168c1558fcdf4341e11769e1James Kremer Occasionally they will make a mistake and set them to a
e4f5a11d4a234623168c1558fcdf4341e11769e1James Kremer "date in the future" then try to correct them by setting
e4f5a11d4a234623168c1558fcdf4341e11769e1James Kremer them to the "current date". This causes problems because
e4f5a11d4a234623168c1558fcdf4341e11769e1James Kremer serial numbers are used to indicate that a zone has been
e4f5a11d4a234623168c1558fcdf4341e11769e1James Kremer updated. If the serial number on the slave server is
7656b92221e26376547b0dc52b67e7a414ea9775Stephen Brooks lower than the serial number on the master, the slave
7656b92221e26376547b0dc52b67e7a414ea9775Stephen Brooks server will attempt to update its copy of the zone.
7656b92221e26376547b0dc52b67e7a414ea9775Stephen Brooks

7656b92221e26376547b0dc52b67e7a414ea9775Stephen Brooks

7656b92221e26376547b0dc52b67e7a414ea9775Stephen Brooks Setting the serial number to a lower number on the master
7656b92221e26376547b0dc52b67e7a414ea9775Stephen Brooks server than the slave server means that the slave will not perform
7656b92221e26376547b0dc52b67e7a414ea9775Stephen Brooks updates to its copy of the zone.
e4f5a11d4a234623168c1558fcdf4341e11769e1James Kremer

e4f5a11d4a234623168c1558fcdf4341e11769e1James Kremer

e4f5a11d4a234623168c1558fcdf4341e11769e1James Kremer The solution to this is to add 2147483647 (2^31-1) to the
e4f5a11d4a234623168c1558fcdf4341e11769e1James Kremer number, reload the zone and make sure all slaves have updated to
e4f5a11d4a234623168c1558fcdf4341e11769e1James Kremer the new zone serial number, then reset the number to what you want
e4f5a11d4a234623168c1558fcdf4341e11769e1James Kremer it to be, and reload the zone again.
